A life-saving relationship with Jesus Christ leads to life-giving relationships with others. Our lives, and the lives of others, are exponentially enriched through mutually encouraging friendships. In 2 Timothy 1:15-18, the Apostle Paul powerfully illustrates how a life-saving relationship with Jesus Christ leads to life-giving relationships with others. Our lives, and the lives of others, are exponentially enriched through mutually encouraging friendships. Knowing how to “walk in the Spirit” and not function in the flesh empowers believers to develop meaningful relationships and overcome difficulties, especially in times of deep disappointment and hurt.

Inevitably, there will be times when a relationship with another person experiences significant difficulty. You may find that someone you have ministered to, shared life with, or invested in turns away from you and may even turn on you. These can be some of life’s most painful experiences if not addressed in a biblical and Spirit-filled manner. Reluctance, or failure, to trust God and walk in the Spirit in times of relational breakdown can lead to a variety of problems, such as bitterness, withdrawal, isolation, and can even stunt your growth as a disciple of Christ. This chapter will give you insights to help address the most painful relationship disappointments.

Life-giving relationships are the outworking of Spirit-filled lives. Encouragement is oxygen to the soul and fuel for our faith. One of the most significant means of developing a ministry to others is learning how to offer sincere encouragement (1 Thes. 3:2; 5:11,14). Relationships thrive when specific encouragement is expressed. Life-giving believers look for ways to show love and give encouragement. Chapter 3 in LIFE-Giving Discipleship will equip you with the skills needed for growing as a grace-filled friend and follower of Christ.
